AudioKit Retro Keys Brings Vintage Keyboard Sounds to iPhone and iPad

AudioKit Pro continues to lean into character-driven instruments with its latest iOS release, Retro Keys. Framed as a compact, all-in-one vintage keyboard suite, the app brings together four classic electric and acoustic-inspired sounds, combining detailed sampling with physical modelling in a way that aims to balance authenticity with efficiency.

At its core, Retro Keys packages four instruments into a single app: Stage 73, Wurlee ’78, CP Electric Grand, and a Retro Piano. These names will feel familiar to anyone who has spent time around vintage keyboards, and the intent here is clear. This App is all about recreating the tonal sounds of classic studio staples, from clean, bell-like tones through to more worn, tape-saturated textures.

AudioKit claims all four instruments fit into around 150MB, which is unusually small for a library that leans on real recordings. That efficiency comes from a hybrid approach: sampled source material handled alongside physical modelling to recreate the response and feel of the originals.

Fantastic Sampled Character

Rather than leaning entirely on multi-gigabyte sample libraries, Retro Keys uses what AudioKit describes as “sampled character” paired with “modeled response.” In practice, that suggests a system where the tonal identity is captured through recordings, while dynamics and interaction are shaped in real time.

This hybrid approach has become more common in recent years, particularly on mobile where storage and performance still matter. The advantage is obvious. You get closer to the nuance of a real instrument without the overhead of a traditional sample library.

AudioKit also notes that the instruments were recorded by a Grammy-nominated engineer, which signals an emphasis on source quality. While that alone does not guarantee realism, it does suggest attention has been paid to capture and tone shaping at the recording stage.

Presets and pricing

Retro Keys ships with over 200 presets, created by a range of sound designers including Moby Pixel, Analog Matthew, and Doug Woods from The Sound Test Room. The focus here appears to be breadth rather than depth, offering a wide set of starting points that cover polished, mix-ready sounds as well as more characterful, degraded tones.

The pricing model is also really nice! The app launches at a $4.99 pre-order price, rising to $19.99, with no subscription involved. In a market where recurring pricing is increasingly common, that one-time purchase approach will likely appeal to a lot of iOS musicians. That intro price is incredibly generous too, so make sure you grab Retro Keys ASAP.

Retro Keys fits neatly into AudioKit Pro’s wider catalogue, which has increasingly focused on accessible, well-voiced instruments for iOS creators. The combination of low storage requirements, AUv3 support, and a hybrid sound engine positions it as a practical option for mobile production setups.

Retro Keys is available for iPad and iPhone via the Apple App Store.
