Logic users on Mac and iPad just got a massive update that added loads of new features.
One of the best new features in Logic is ChromaGlow, an AI powered saturation plugin that’s designed to replicate the warmth and colouration of analog audio equipment
In this video I’m going to share three alternatives to ChromaGlow that are not only available for both Mac and iOS, but are also completely free.
Tape Cassette 2
Tape Cassette 2 from Caelum audio is the lite version of their full fat Tape Pro plugin.
Having said that just because it’s free doesn’t mean it doesn’t sound fantastic. It accurately emulates the tone, dynamics, and saturation properties of cassette tape recorders.
You can add a sprinkling of Tape Cassette 2 to things like drums and vocals for a bit of extra flavour, or crank things up and apply it to your master track to add a whole new feel to your songs.
Chow TapeModel
Originally developed as part of a music signal processing class at Stanford University, Chow Tape Model is a digital emulation of a reel-to-reel analog tape machine.
Don’t let the straightforward UI fool you, ChowTapeModel can pack some punch.
There are 4 main columns each with several diffeent tabs that allow you to control everything from Input gain, Saturation and Compression, to Flutter, Wow and CHEW effects.
It’s a surprisingly deep app, especially considering it’s free.
808 Overdrive Pro
Nembrini Audio do a roaring trade in super high quality emulations of popular guitar amps, effects and pedals. 808 Overdrive Pro is their take on Ibanez’s TS808 overdrive pedal and while it was definitely designed with guitarists in mind, it’s relatively subtle and smooth saturation sounds good Lon loads of different things.
It can add a little extra bite to drums, add some extra body to vocals and obviously it sounds good on guitars too.
Definitely more versatile than you might think, 808 Overdrive Pro is worth a download.
There are three excellent ChromaGlow alternatives that you can grab for free for GarageBand on Mac AND iPad/iPhone!
