On the ‘My Songs’ screen, hold your finger on the icon of the song you wish to share for a few seconds – you’ll see it will become highlighted and the menu will appear in the top left of the screen. Tap on the ‘share’ icon.

You can choose to share your track via email or directly to Facebook, Soundcloud or YouTube. You also have the option to export to your iTunes library, to another app or even as a ringtone! For the purposes of this tutorial, i’m going to select to share to Soundcloud.

Whichever site you choose, you’ll be able to fine tune the details of your exported track – here (once i’ve signed into my Soundcloud account) I can change the name of my track, choose whether to allow followers to hear it straight away and select the quality of the exported file amongst other options.

      1. Hi Patrick: I have a question about the GB APP IOS. It is about sharing project files between collaborators. I saw someone has already posted a similar question which currently has no replies so I have cut and pasted their question below. Thank you for your help.-Jeff Free

Hi Patrick: How can I share a song ( separate tracks) with another iOS user? I have a music partner in a different city and want him to be able to add tracks and send back and visa-versa. Is this possible and if so how.

        Thanks!

  1. How can I share a song ( separate tracks) with another iOS or mac user? I have a music partner in a different city and want him to be able to add tracks and send back. Is this possible and if so how.

    Thanks!

  2. HELP! I was using the share button and everything was working great. I exported several songs into imovie. But now when I go to the share icon and click on import with imovie or open in itunes or open with… the program just shuts down. I was enjoying this feature so much! I just don’t know what happened and I cannot get anyone out there to help. Please help!

  3. Patrick, thanks for the article. I have a question. I’m trying to share a project with a friend, not a completed song. I would like him to be able to add some tracks and send it back to me. So how do I share a garageband project on my ios? Jeff, Jim and I all have the same question but it was never answered. I’d be super stoked if you could enlighten us.

  4. I’ve got the latest iOS on my iPad air 2, have the latest version of GB installed and then whole ‘sharing’ thing doesn’t work – period!

I can’t share as song, or a project in any way whatsoever. No dice on emailing either (email sends with NO file attached), saving to dropbox or drive or even Air Dropping – I’ve tried Air Drop to iphone and mac Desktop but nothing works, I just get repeated error messages saying cannot save file or unknown error occured, or file type not recognised. Literally cannot save a damn thing to any other device in any way whatsoever.

Oh, and I can’t even save anything into iTunes!

It seems like the iOS and GarageBand engineers don’t communicate ever. It is a pointless fruitless app now, totally locked down on iPad. I can basically just sit on my sofa and tap out music, solely by myself (gone is all collaboration) and store the music only on my iPad – a 16gb iPad….GREAT.

Since Steve passed, the Q.C at Apple has become so abysmal. I’m fast beginning to really hate using their kit.

  5. Since you are answering questions, can I yet go back and forth between saved versions of my song in iOS and Mac? Would love to work on my music locally on Mac and remote on iPad. Thanks.

  6. Hi,

I can’t seem to export my songs from Garageband on iPad any more. When I send it to email it doesn’t play.

    Can you help?

  7. I have a similar issue, I would like to collaborate with artists living in different parts of the country, and be able to send the whole .project file to them along with all sound files.
At the moment, only airdrop allows you to send the entire .project file to someone else and they can import it, which requires you to be in the same room.
The other way would be to run all iPads off the same iCloud login and password, which would then backup from each ipad as additions are made.
But you would almost have to buy a new iPad solely for using GarageBand on for each band member.
I would love to know if there is an easier way to send the project file through email or another cloud server, or any other way I haven’t thought of yet.
Or who do you email at apple to suggest what we’re after?

  8. I recorded a song using GarageBand on my iPod, then e-mailed it to my husband’s laptop, and the attachment was an MP4 of some kind, which I was able to convert online to MP3 for a song hosting site. The next time I did the same thing, the attachment was “.band” and it won’t open. Why did this change? How do I change it back???

  9. Hi everyone, same issue here, April 2020. Can’t share GB iOS projects via any path for love or money. Simply doesn’t work. Any ideas?

  10. “Share” doesn’t show up as an option when I click on my project in “My Songs” on my iPhone. Every tutorial I read says this should be an option, but it’s not. Please help.

  11. A project is all of the editable, sperate tracks of one song. A song is all of them combined and finished. You are only explaining how to share a song. Everyone here wants to know how to send a project. Please don’t use project and song interchangeably. They are not the same.
