Free Chorus Plug In (Yes – It Works In Garageband 10)

If there’s one thing that Apple got a wee bit wrong during the roll out of their new operating system and subsequent update to Garageband, it was communication.

A TON of people got in contact complaining that many of their plug ins – some free  and some bought and paid forjust didn’t work with their brand spanking new version of GB… And no-one would give them a straight answer as to why.

It slowly became clear that this was due to Garageband 10’s lack of support to anything other than 64-bit plug ins (bringing it in line with it’s ‘big brother’, Logic X) meaning a lot of big name plug ins got left out in the cold. Some are still waiting on a fix or solution.

But enough doom and gloom.

Here’s something that will cheer you right up – a fully featured, flexible and superb sounding plug in from the brilliant folks over at Blue Cat Audio.

Check out the video below for the skinny.

So there you go – grab your free plug in right now! You can download it on it’s own, or as part of a plug in pack, which includes a rockin’ Phaser and awesome Flanger amongst other things. Have a gander at the full package right here.

To get up and running, simply select the MAC AU option from the list of interface types and once the .DMG file has downloaded, double click it to gain access to the contents. Drag and drop both .components into the adjacent components folder shortcut.

Open Garageband and you should be able to access Blue Cat’s Chorus  smooth and silky awesomeness from the AU plug ins menu.

Trouble Shooting

If the above method doesn’t work (and I know that it hasn’t for some of you – thanks for getting in touch and letting me know by the way. You guys are brilliant!) you can follow these steps to ‘manually’ put the .component files in the correct place.

We’re going to put the .component files into the other library folder on your Mac. The method described above deposits them into your Hard Disk’s library folder, whereas this second way puts them into the library folder tied to your user profile. Why does Garageband take it’s plug in info from one of these folders and not the other? I honestly have no idea!!

I DO know this works though…

So..

Follow the same steps as above, until you open the downloaded .DMG file – instead of dragging and dropping the .components into the component folder shortcut:

On your Mac desktop, click ‘Go’ in the toolbar at the top of the screen:

Toolbar 1

Press the ‘option’ button on your keyboard to reveal the ‘Library’ – select it to open your Mac’s library files in a new finder window.

From here, go LIBRARY > AUDIO > PLUG INS > COMPONENTS  and drop the Blue Cat Chorus .component files into the components folder.

LIBRARY

You’re good to go – next time you open Garageband Blue Cat’s Chorus will be in the list of available AU plug ins… Phew!!

What did you make of the Blue Cat Chorus? Dig it? Hate its guts? Let me know in the comments!

  1. So, I’ve downloaded the Blue Cat VST plug ins for Garageband, I have a Mac OS X 10.8.5, I’ve put them in the VST plug ins folder. How do I get them to show up on my Garageband options? Hope you can help.

    Pete

    1. Hey Pete. Great comment – Sorry – I should have been more clear. It’s the Mac AU option you need to download. I’ve since added a section at the end of the article that explains this. Hope that helps!

  2. Hi Patrick,

Thanks for the steer but for a newbie like me there were some bits missing from the video. Blue Cat give you 2 or 3 different Mac versions of the software to download and like other Pete above, I’d have no idea how or where to install and then access the plug in. Could you enlighten us?

And thanks again for the Blue Cat info. I’ll def install the plug ins.

    PETE

  3. There’s also so issue with something called “sandboxing.” I don’t really understand what that means. I do know that is why my favorite compressor plug-in , DCAM FreeComp does not work.

  4. Not having used a downloaded plug-in before, I decided to jump right in and try it. I downloaded the Mac AU version of the file, as appropriate for my computer. I opened the .dmg file. I read the README.rtf instructions. I copied the plug-in files to the Components alias as instructed. I opened Garageband and went to the Library choices to try out my new Chorus plug-in. And Voila!????? I find nothing there any different from the basic set I had before.

I independently checked the library folder on my Mac to see if the plug-in files were there — they were.

    Any advice?

    1. Check out the wee trouble shooting bit i’ve added to the article and give it a whirl – there are actually 2 library folders in your Mac, one that links to your HDD as a whole and one that is User specific. I have no idea why Garageband draws it’s component info from one and not the other…

  5. Tried to download to my IPad 2,but it says Safari cannot download this file?Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thank you 🙂

    1. Bizarre. Blue Cat Audio are a BIG company, the chances of them having any kind of dodgy malware etc. in their files is miniscule. I’ve downloaded lots of times from their site and never had any trouble!

  6. im stumped. this is my first attmept to download an au plug in and it’s driving me crazy. i got the file downloaded, but i have no idea how to find the component folder so i can’t drag the file there. . i do know that you must enable the au inputs in the gb prefereces……but that’s getting ahead of myself. know this is basic stuff, but i really need help learning it. thanks.

    1. I’ve added detailed run throughs on two ways to install the plug in to the article Jay. Check it out and let me know if you’re still stuck man – we’ll get there!

  7. I’ve put both versions into the components folder, but only the mono is showing up in the plug-ins? Any ideas why the stereo version is not? Thanks so much!

  8. I love this plug in very good sounds and adjustable chorus that I use quite frequently thanks mate!
