GarageBand – Should You Update? Q&A #8

Apple updated GarageBand to version 10 way back in 2013, yet the previous version of our favourite digital audio workstation was so fully featured and stable that many users are still using it to this day.

Having said that, the many extra features, free sounds and added functionality that Apple have added to GarageBand 10 since launch make it the definitive version for most folks.

Like many users making the switch, Jason has a few questions about what will happen to his existing sounds and projects when he switches to Garageband 10.

  1. Isn’t there was a question of GB10 not having the same number of editing effects available as the older GB 11 ? Read something about this- please advise…

    1. Nah, GB 10 has more editing options available. It is missing a ducking feature though, which is why GB ’11/6.0.5 is a better choice for podcasters.

  2. I love you emails Patrick. I do alright for an old analogue guy and what I’d like to know is how can I install 3rd party software, in particular Drums into Garage Band. Every time that I try tori feel daft. There’s got to be an easy way. Can you please help me. Thanks. Rock On.

  3. how to do a project in 3/4 time signature.Available loops are in 4/4.is it possible to use RMX in this GarageBand.

  4. Hi Patrick,

Thanks for your helpful and clear tutorials.
I like the Drummer section IOS.
I often find myself cutting/copying/dragging to shorten or lengthen segments and pasting slices
of different tracks. Much to my chagrin When doing this, I will find drum fills
changed or absent, even though I will have the follow button
off for that drummer section that was affected.
Is there a way to avoid this from happening? Thanks

  5. Hi Patrick,

This year when I bought a new imac I asked the dealer to maintain my Garageband version 6.0.5 from my old imac, because I have over 200 projects open and I didn’t want to risk losing them by updating. I was also happy with the version I was using. Now I’ve received Apple pop-ups telling me version 6 will soon be unsupportable on my imac due to to the upcoming 64-bit configuration. Is it possible to update my Garageband and still keep all my open projects along with all the loops I’ve acquired over the past few years?

  6. Export and import some songs from old Garageband to newer version and find out. My GF said the sound is not that good after transferring files over. She hangs on the old mac and dust just for the sake of the old garageband. IMO, I use another DAW instead.
