Garageband 10 – What’s New?

What a week!

Music minded Apple fans have hardly had time to stop and catch their breath, what with the unveiling of Mavericks, Garageband iOS getting an update and the massive overhaul of Garageband in the form of Garageband X. Not to mention Apple’s change in pricing strategy for both it’s DAWs (and by ‘change in pricing strategy’ I of course mean that THEY’RE FREE)!

It’s all been a bit crazy

There’s been a wee bit confusion surrounding the ins and outs of the latest iteration of Garageband on Mac and it’s true – a lot has changed.

In this video I help set the record straight on some of the sillier rumours you may have heard and shed some light on some of Garageband X’s new features.

In this video:

  • AU Plug in Meltdown

  • Automation

  • Smart Controls

  • Visual EQ FTW!

  • Automating A Fade Out V2.0

  • Drummer (overview)

There’s LOADS more brand new Garageband goodness coming your way in the next wee while – make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss a thing!

  1. Hi Patrick,

concerning the AU-Plugins, there aren’t any showing up in the section you mention in the video – not even the ones from Apple. How do I get them (like BitCrusher etc.) to show up?

My former version of GB was 5.1 (which is still in a separate folder on my HD)

    Thanks René

    1. Dear Patrick,

maybe I just found the answer myself. As I did not have Garageband 11, maybe this is why there are no AU Plug ins in GB X now (Garageband 5.1 wasn’t 64 bit and I found some Plug in settings in the Application Support folders of Garageband which date back to 2003)

BUT: I recorded a vocal track and then had a closer look at the library of GB X. There is at the bottom of the list an entry that says “Legacy Versions” and in there “Garage Band”. This contains a lot of options to choose from. One of those options is “Effects” and there is a setting called “Atari Sings”.

Selecting this setting for instance opens up a Smart control that has a “Bit Crusher” included. So it’s just a bit more fiddling around if you didn’t own GB 11 I guess.

      All the best,
      René

      1. UPDATE:
It’s me again and after trying to get a free 64bit AU Plugin (http://kunz.corrupt.ch/products/tal-vocoder) working in GB X by putting it into the HD’s LIBRARY > AUDIO > PLUG-INS > COMPONENTS folder all of a sudden also the Apple AU Plug-ins are showing up.

Probably putting the file in the Components folder activated the preference for AU Plug-Ins. It would have been easier just to go to the GB preferences and under the Audio/Midi tab check the Audio Units checkbox in the Effects section (as I realized afterwards).

On activating the new Vocoder plug-in in the info panel of the Smart Controls section I was prompted by GB to lower the security settings but after that everything worked fine.

I hope this helps some of you to get your 64 bit AU-Plug-Ins work again. And thanks Patrick for the video. Without it I wouldn’t have gone onto this AU Plug hunt …

        All the best,
        René

        1. So I’ve been trying desperately to get this AU to work to no avail. How did you get it to work? I have Yosemite and trying to download it onto this garageband and install it has failed. It continues to take me to the Terminal and not show up in garageband. Help?

      2. You’ve answered your own question here René – you can utilise effects like the good old bitcrusher by recording on a track with a patch that uses that particular effect.

Fiddly? Definitely, but good to know those effects are still there in some shape and form.

Thanks for sharing René – you’re awesome!

        1. Hi!
I’m having the same problem, I still can’t find the way to get back some of the presets like bit crusher and all the old stuff, I’ve done everything, I’ve been searching everywhere, and I use it a lot, it’s a shame because I love some of the new features, but I really need the old ones. I hope you can help me.

          Thanks!

    1. Yeah, brand new bass amps are available and there are a lot of new pedals and sounds. The guitar amps in general sound a LOT better than in Garageband ’11.

    1. Not as such Jillian. I’m going to go ahead and make a prediction: I think Apple will release Podcaster settings/patches as a downloadable pack via mini transaction a la the Drummer feature…

      1. There are some podcasting patches in the library under:
Legacy versions > GarageBand > Podcasting (at least on my system)

        1. These are only available if you upgraded from GB ’11. If you have a fresh install of Garageband X you won’t be able to see any of the Legacy patches.

      1. The End of Song Marker is now ridiculous! It is nearly impossible to move it without zooming instead.
What I have to do is turn on the Help “?” to show me when my cursor touches the EOS Marker.
What a royal pain, Apple. What dummy designed this thing?

  2. I need some help in installing Izoptope Vinyl. I’ve downloaded the plug in which is sitting in my Apps folder. Inside is the Vinyl folder with various subfolders and files inside that. Do I drag the Vinyl folder into /Library/Audio/Plugins/Components? If not the whole folder, what files or subfolders do I drag across.

Once I have that installed in the correct folder and start Garageband, I open a new track, open the smart controls so that the Audio Units window is visible. Then what?

Apologies if I’m being obtuse but I’ve wrestled with this for a couple of hours and am getting nowhere. Thanks in advance.

  3. How would I get the old plug ins such as Helium Breath, Deeper Vocals, etc if I didn’t upgrade from GarageBand 11?

  4. Hi, nice vid! I have just a problem: why can’t i use AU Plug ins on a single track, but only on a Master track?
The interface AU plugins in fact, opens only if i click also on the Master Button..

  5. Thanks for staying on top of Garageband and keeping us informed.

I find myself sticking with Garageband 11 due to mastering considerations. I downloaded the basic version of t-Racks but it doesn’t work in Garageband 10. It’s difficult to believe IK hasn’t upgraded this by now.

Have you created any mastering videos or guides to mastering that a non-sound engineer can understand?

    Thanks again.

  6. Sorry. I just saw you “want to master garageband” link. I should have searched the site before posting.

  7. hey,
So i’m new here, and am interested in learning how to use garage band. For years it has been on my computer, so i have a very old version of it (5.1). Would you recommend me to keep this version or upgrade it? Is it worth it?
    Thanx
