Garageband Tutorial For Beginners – Automation Crash Course

One of the most useful skills you can add to your Garageband tool/brain box, Automation is sometimes dismissed as ‘boring’ or ‘unnecessary’.

While getting to grips with Automation won’t help improve that new shredd-tastic guitar sound you’ve been working on or turn that lackluster vocal take into a world class performance, it can drastically improve the dynamics of your project.

I put together this video Crash Course to help give you an idea of the kinds of simple things you can do with Automation. In It I show you:

How to create a dynamic intro by Automating volume and effects

How to automate panning to make things sound more natural

How Automating a Crescendo and Decrescendo effect can really make your listeners sit up and take notice

How easy it is to make a ‘sneaky’ fade out ending

Check it out:

See, that wasn’t so bad, was it?

  1. Hi Patrick

Thank you very much for the info but I just want to record my band live. I have finally worked it out sortof but I am sure I could do it better. There are features like dry; small room, chipmunk etc. How are they used? Why does it start with a bloody metronome all the time?? Uggh

For technophobes like me most of it is just too hard. I want to learn but somehow it doesn’t compute. My garage band is on my Ipad

Thanks and yes I I have subscribed

    Cheers Paul

    1. Hey Paul,

Hmm. When you say you want to record your band live, do you mean you’re all playing at once and you want to capture that performance? Or are you looking to record each instrument separately?

The effects you can add after using the Audio Recorder don’t have much use in the real world – I think they were added as a novelty mostly – don’t worry about them.

The metronome is just to keep you in time, you can either speed it up/slow it down to match the song you’re recording or turn it off completely by tapping the COG icon in the top right of the Garageband app window, select ‘SONG’ at the top and switch the Metronome to OFF.

And Paul? EVERYONE starts somewhere, it doesn’t matter how tech savvy you are, you’ll get to grips with it in the end.

  2. I wasn’t even aware this was possible to automate effects and plug ins too. Can you do this with all plugins?

    1. Hey Bryant, yeah – different plug ins will let you automate different aspects of them depending on their complexity. It’s an incredibly powerful tool – well worth getting to grips with!

  3. Hi,
So i am probably the most un-tech savvy person living in the 21st century and yet i have this Sound and Image project due next week which requires me to “layer” and “pan” out different sounds into a mix tape or something. An apology in advance if this is the stupidest question you have come across: but is this possible on garageband? I honestly only figured that my Mac has this software called garageband …yeah thats how low tech i am. But yes if it possible, it would be amazing if you could help me out with some suggestions. Thank you
