The Best Free Plugins? My Top 5 for 2021

We really are spoiled for choice when it comes to genuinely useful and usable free plugins.

Whatever genre of music you create, there are literally hundreds of Audio Units that you can download for free that will help take your GarageBand projects to a whole new level.

In the video below I share my picks for the best free plugins you can grab right now.

Valhalla Frequency Echo

The mix of its frequency shifter and analogue echo simulation combine to create some epic and surprising sonic effects. Definitely one for all you fiddlers out there, it can take a while to get to grips with how exactly Valhalla Frequency Echo affects your audio. My advice is to pay particular attention to the Low cut and High cut knobs. Adjusting these can make the difference between a pleasingly chaotic end result and well, just chaos.

Klevgrand Free Amp

If you love playing with big knobs as much as I do, you’ll appreciate Free Amp. It’s a stripped down version of Klevgrand’s popular plugin Re-amp. Overdrive is the name of the game here and Free amp keeps things really simple. There’s a big old drive knob here and a mix and output knob. And that’s it. And that’s all this great free plugin needs!

MAutoPitch

If you want more control when tuning your vocals, the obvious answer is to fork out the $400 antares want for their autotune plugin, right? Well, hold your horses, as Melda production have a great pitch correction plugin that does many of the things Autotune does, for free.

Nembrini Clon Minotaur

HAVE YOU SEEN HOW MUCH GENUINE KLON CENTUAR GUITAR PEDALS COST? Thankfully, the guitar heroes over at Nembrini Audio have managed to faithfully recreate that sought after transparent overdrive sound associated with the Klon Centaur with their brand new Clon Minotaur plugin.

iZotope Vinyl

For a long time the original iZotope Vinyl was one of my favourite plugins. Vinyl simulates the dust, scratches, warp, and mechanical noise reminiscent of yesteryear. It also gives you a whole host of controls to play with.
