  1. Yo! Thanks for this, I was looking for a comprehensive shortcut list for Garageband and this one is great. Much appreciated sir.

  2. Great resource, Patrick. Thanks for making it. I’m going to reduce it to print the pages as thumbnails, so I can fit it all on a single print-out page. I may squint a bit, but that way it will take up less room as I stick it right next to my computer in my studio, where such a tool rightly belongs. Cheers!

  3. You are the best source of Garageband help on the internet, thanks so much for all your effort Patrick, you are a superb bloke so Good Luck with your own music

    cheers Phillip 🙂

  4. i am new to garageband i have the 10.0.03 version with no legacy instruments. does your manual give instructions on how to put sample loops straight onto the keys on the musical keyboard so i can play the loops like a piano?

  5. As always you take the time consuming fumbling I would be doing and supply me with info I really can use. Great Stuff!!

  6. I am looking for an up-to-date, comprehensive set of instructions for Garageband. You mention the “cheat sheet” items being buried deep in the Apple guide to Garageband. Is there such a guide from Apple? If so, how can I get to it? All the published guides I have found are for software versions that pre-date the current one and are useless. I suppose if there was such a guide, there might not need to be a person such as you who took the time to learn and write all the information you have compiled and if you publicize the existence of such a comprehensive guide, you might make your website obsolete but I thought I’d ask anyway. I am particularly interested in details of how to use Garageband to write music using a blank score and entering notes without playing the music on an instrument and recording it and then editing it. Thanks for all your work and help.

  7. This is very helpful. Thank you so much!

Just to confirm – there’s no way to customize the keyboard settings, right? If not, I really wish you could. I wish, for example, zooming in/out of the timeline could be accomplished with one button press rather than holding down one key and pressing another. Such frequently used functions should never be more than one key press. Non-linear editing software, such as Avid and Premiere Pro (and even Apple’s own Final Cut software) offer robust keyboard customization options. It’s a shame they aren’t available here (unless I’m mistaken — and it’d be great if I was!).

    Thanks again.

  8. Thank you for the confirmation, and for the quick reply! The lack of key binding is unfortunate, but certainly not a deal-breaker. It’s still a great piece of software that keeps me busy for hours, days, weeks, months…

  9. Patrick thanks for being so generous with your expertise. This was very well done and quite helpful.

Recalling your run through on the “details” section makes me wonder: is there a way for me to determine before recording which key or keys are best for my singing voice?

Similar ly,are there any rules of thumb as to when to use one time signature vs another?

    Thanks in advance.

  10. This is very helpful — I can see it will save me a lot of time and mousing around. Is there any way you can fit this on one or 2 sheets? If not no worries – ‘preciate you creating this.

  11. Thanks Patrick. Always good to have this kind of crib sheet to hand. Your guides are really helping me along on the GB learning curve. KUTGW!

  12. Thanks Patrick, more stuff to keep the old grey cells active along with the getting to grips with musical terms , G.B tools etc,…just found out what D.A.W. is but totally enjoying this new found hobby, nothing like a bit of creativity to keep the cells boiling, thanks again.

  13. Patrick,
I am using Garageband on my ipad Pro. I can record tracks, but only 9 measures worth, then garageband stops the recording. Any suggestions?

  14. Thank you a lot. Im so glad that I found a steady guide downloaded on my Galaxy tab. Im able to simultaniously reading , while exploring Garageband on my new Mac book Air M1! I really do preciate guys like you , that are always willing to support others. Best wishes Anders from Stockholm
