Catalina Update

Don’t Update to Catalina

Important Information for macOS Users!

Apple are getting ready to release their latest version of macOS: 10.15 Catalina.

This Catalina update introduces a wealth of new and exciting features to the platform, however it also presents several large issues for users who record and produce music on their Mac.

General Consensus is to DEFINITELY NOT update to macOS 10.15 Catalina – that is, if you value the opinion of plugin and hardware developers like IK Multimedia, Blue Cat Audio, iZotope, Slate Digital, Native Instruments, ROLI and more.

In this video, I explain why GarageBand Users should hold off updating to macOS Catalina.

My recommendation is to hold off from updating to macOS Catalina for the time being.

At the very least, create a Time Machine backup of your machine BEFORE updating, so you can revert to your current setup if you find essential programs, plugins or hardware are not compatible.

  1. Seems this happens quite a bit until people complain and they fix it later on. I’m still miffed that I can’t use my Line 6 Pod Farm unit in new Garageband,be great if Apple or Line 6 would make all units and downloads compatible…oh to dream…lol. Cheers for the warning PAT 🙂

  2. I agree a more bugged piece of software is hard to find.

despite signing in to App store – garage band and Logic both download but don’t respond to my correct app store name and password to download extra sounds

  3. I updated to Catalina already and now my Garageband is up the creek. it is 10.3.2. Can I do anything to get Garageband working normal again or is there a way of reversing back from Catalina/

  4. Hey Patrick! I am hoping you will reply. I’m a newbie to GarageBand, but my Mac has been acting really buggy, and now that Catalina is up to 10.15.7, I though I should update.

Well, I was about to install and get a message from the Catalina installer saying GarageBand won’t work if I upgrade! But I actually just started using it to create vocal tracks for choirs I work with and am about to help record a podcasted musical. Thoughts? I mean, I guess I could upgrade and then pay for Logic or ProTools?

  5. Is there any way to get an installer (Mac) for GarageBand 10.35? All I can find is GarageBand 10.42 which wont work with Mojave OR ANYTHING UNDER Big Sur. I really hate this company for this….

  6. There is a solution but it involves a second Mac with Garageband, a bit of knowledge of Airdrop, the Terminal app and how to type a command line while root.

IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS A MAC (with Garageband and with the same OSX version as you, otherwise just try) HE JUST HAVE TO SHARE WITH AIRDROP THE GARAGE BAND APP (located in the /Applications folder. Your friend has to be a bit familiar with navigating to the root of the disk).

WHEN YOU RECEIVE THE APP, YOU HAVE TO MOVE IT TO THE /Applications FOLDER:

    sudo mv Downloads/Garageband.app /Applications

You wil be asked your Mac connection password. If all went good, you can now open Garageband on your Mac.

    1. I tried what you said but the GarageBand app appears with the cross out. I have tried everything said on the internet but I always get the message popups saying not compatible requires Mac os11………..I need it for my daughter’s school project and I can’t afford to buy her a new MacBook. this is insane……………….

    2. I have old MacBook Pro (mid 2012) and it is not working with the solution you have mentioned. Maybe some others have worked with this solution.
if you have any other suggestions please help me out. can’t afford to buy a newer MacBook.
