Blue Cat Audio’s Free Amp

If you’re getting bored of the guitar sounds and effects that come bundled with GarageBand on Mac, installing third party plug ins is a good way to expand your sonic horizons.

The good news is you don’t have to break the bank to get your hands on some great sounding and usable guitar tones.

I’m a huge fan of Blue Cat Audio and their exceptional Freeware plugin pack, so i was excited to dive into what their  free guitar amp simulation plug-in – Free Amp – had to offer.

Blue cat’s free amp is a stripped down taster of what their fully featured Axiom and Destructor amp sims can do. Inspired by legendary (but unspecified for copyright reasons) guitar amplifiers from the real world, the include classic clean, Classic Drive and Modern Drive amp models run the tone gamut from clean vintage sounds from the early days of electric guitar to more modern, high gain metal tones.

Each of the three amp sims available come loaded with great sounding presets to get you started.

Obviously Blue cat have intended Free Amp as a taster of the kind of sounds it’s possible to create in their premium amp sims, but It’s amazing how close to those premium sounds Free Amp gets.

I reviewed Blue Cat’s Destructor plugin back when it was released and am happy to confirm that despite being free, Blue Cat’s Free Amp contains the same high quality amp simulations, albeit on a smaller scale.

Blue Cat Audio’s Free Amp is available to download from Blue Cat Audio’s website, either as a standalone plugin, or as a part of their excellent Freeware pack.
