USB Mic VS Audio Interface – Q&A #4

In this latest edition of Garageband Q&A, Jeanne Wolfe asks whether a USB microphone (the Samson C01U to be exact) is a good way to get started when recording in Garageband and if it will give results good enough for her to use on her podcast.

It’s a great question. In the video I weigh up the pros and cons of using both a USB microphone and an audio interface and XLR microphone set up.

I’d be interested to know where you started out with your first Garageband microphone. Did you dive right in and grab a full on XLR mic and audio interface? Or did you decide on a USB microphone at the outset? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I am a beginner and enjoying learning Garageband.

I have a fairly general question.

When I put loops together into a simple composition ( eg a ringtone), there seems to be a lot of trial and error to find loops that sound related/compatible in a composition. Is there a way of looking at the loop properties to see those which are most likely to sound good together

    Thanks

  2. In previous versions of GarageBand you could create podcasts with slides (photo images). I can’t find a way to do that in GarageBand 11. Is that option still available!
Thanks! Your site has been so helpful!

  4. I want to facilitate Garage band as a sound module. I am looking for sound effects (EDM type, whoosh, rises and crazy sweeps)
Are there samples that work in Garage Band of this type of sounds?
Can I trigger via midi by activating the track that I have a sound effect like this occupying?

    Thanks,

    Marc

  5. Howdy Pat I have a apogee one that has a built in condenser mic but could never get the mic to work very well. I think there is a way of selecting the mic using apogee maestro, then doing some un plugging and replugging ONES connections? If you know anything about it please let me know(damm thing cost me over 600 bucks!) thanks……..tom

  6. Patrick,
As I understand it, you cannot play with the tempo of an audio recorded instruments. I.e., you cannot record a difficult guitar part at a slower speed and then speed it up to a higher tempo.

Is there a workaround for this problem?

    Thanks!
