For those of you looking to add a brand spanking new MIDI controller to your arsenal of studio gear, there’s never been so much choice.

Depending on your budget, there are likely dozens of different makes and models to choose from.

One company thats always managed to stand out from the crowd in the budget to mid price range is IK Multimedia, who have spent the last six years perfecting their line of super functional yet affordable range of MIDI controllers.

Their latest offering, the iRig Keys I/O, aims to provide – in IK Multimedia’s own words – “A total music production system in a controller”.

And you know what? They just might have done it…

Small But Perfectly Formed

Coming in two different sizes; the iRig Keys I/O is compact enough to be considered truly portable, especially the 25 key variant that I tested. There’s also a 49 key version if you prefer to have a few more octaves to hand.

The I\O is absolutely packed with features. Here’s the run down;

  • All-in-one, fully portable, ultra-compact MIDI controller with 24-bit / 96kHz capable input/output audio interface for iPhone, iPad, Mac and PC
  • Available in 49 or 25 keys versions with full size keys and smooth, velocity-sensitive, synth-action keyboard
  • Smart, ultra-compact, elegant design
  • Easily transportable, fits anywhere
  • MFi certified by Apple (“Made for iPhone and iPad”) includes Lightning Cable
  • Includes mobile device support stand
  • Comprehensive controls: 2 slider strips for pitch and modulation (user programmable,) octave, program change and transport controls, 5 programmable touch sensitive knobs, 8 velocity-sensitive multi-colored assignable pads
  • Neutrik® combo input jack for line, instrument or microphones
  • 48V phantom power button
  • Balanced stereo and headphone outputs
  • Powered by USB, 4 AA batteries or optional external power supply (charges your iOS device)
  • Comes with the most comprehensive collection of software instruments and pro studio processors on the market: a value of over $/€ 550 (25-keys model) and $/€ 750 (49-keys model) for software and apps

Plays Like A Dream

All of these killer features shouldn’t detract from the fact that the iRig Keys I/O is just really damn playable.

The full size keys are a joy to play and while not weighted, feel better than keys on a controller in this price range have any right to. The layout of the other controls is both intuitive and economical, with most controls having assignable dual functions.

You can get as technical as you want here. The I/O is set up to provide a ‘plug and play’ experience straight out of the box, but if you want to dive in and edit the available controls to your heart’s desire, a quick scan of the manual is all you’ll need to get started.

Whether you are a macOS user looking for a versatile MIDI controller, an iOS songwriter looking for a travel-proof studio set up or anything in between, the iRig Keys I/O has got you covered. You’ll struggle to find a more fully featured controller at this price point.

Conclusion
Marketed as an all in one solution for musicians on the go, IK Multimedia have packed in an astonishing amount of features into the iRig Keys I/O. Equally useable as a MIDI controller and interface on both macOS and iOS, the I/O's intuitive controls make tweaking every aspect of your recordings a breeze.
