Garageband 10.0.3 Update : The Good, The Bad And The Awesome…

At the time of writing it’s been a little over a week since Apple unveiled OS X Yosemite to the world at large and with it their latest update to Garageband – version 10.0.3.

As I mentioned in my first impressions feature, it’s fair to say that Apple dropped the ball in a big way when they first released Garageband 10. Stripped of a lot of the features, effects and flexibility found in its predecessor (which, tellingly, was left intact and usuable on your Mac after upgrading) Garageband 10 rubbed a lot of people up the wrong way.

A year and two minor updates (10.0.1 +10.0.2) later, things weren’t much better, with users still feeling left out in the cold.

Apple really had to pull something pretty extraordinary out of the bag with version 10.0.3…

…and you know what?

They did.

Shiny New Sounds

There are a number of big ‘blockbuster’ additions to Garageband in version 10.0.3 – here’s a roundup of my personal top 3 favourite new features.

In the video:

  • Effects are Back!

  • Dymamic Tracks

  • Bass Amp Designer

Slicker Interface

There have also been a number of less flashy but still pretty damn useful changes to the way Garageband 10 handles it’s interface.

For example, the native visual EQ now works in a slightly different way.

Now when you click on the EQ tab in the Smart Control window, a Plug in duplicate of the EQ will be created, allowing you to access and manipulate it on a larger scale – great if you’re working with a smaller screen!

Garageband 10.0.3 EQ

Simple Sharing With Mail Drop

Collaborating with other Garageband users just got a whole lot easier in Garageband 10.0.3. Clicking on ‘Share’ in the toolbar will reveal a new option – Mail.

Selecting to share via Mail opens up a small dialog box where you can choose whether to send a mixdown of your project in mp3 format or the actual project itself via your Mac’s built in Mail app.

Mail Drop

A word of warning – the maximum file size you are able to send via Mail is 34mb, so sharing those larger projects might be better done using compressed files or an online service like Dropbox or iCloud.

“Could not find layout General Audio 10”

It’s not all sunshine and lollipops however. Immediately after updating, I booted up Garageband and dived into the updated Vocal Patches, only to be met with the error message: “Could not find layout General Audio 10”.

I was puzzled to say the least. No amount of restarts or fiddling seemed to do the trick, until I tried this:

Could not find layout General Audio 10

Opening the ‘Garageband’ menu from the toolbar and selecting ‘Restore Sound Library’ prompted a quick download and then voilà – I was good to go.

In Conclusion

Not only does Garageband 10.0.3 improve on the (many) flaws of it’s immediate predecessors, it also brings a whole host of new features to the table. This added flexibility and usability really allows you to be as creative as you want to be, without the ‘imposed’ limitations present previously.

Garageband 10 still isn’t perfect. Yes – you’re still going to run into some bugs from time to time and no, your 32 bit plug ins still won’t run, but it really seems that Apple have taken on board a lot of the criticism levelled at the program in the last year and acted on it.

With that said – would I recommend updating to 10.0.3?

Definitely.

This is just too cool to miss out on.

  1. Thanks for the tip. However, I have downloaded files using the tip above.
The restore option never grays out tho!! After I restore the files shouldn’t it go away?
    Thanks
    Mark

      1. Hi Patrick, I am very new to GB and would like to check if after completing the ‘Restore Sound Library’ procedure the promised 24 new sounds, 1500 loops and 17 drummers kit are really present.
If I press the ‘loop button’ without adding filters it lists totally 1365 items, so where are the other 135?
Is it possible to get a list of those 24 sounds? For example the only piano available, even after restoring, is the Steinway Grand Piano….
I can find the 17 drummers so that point should be ok.
I confirm that ‘Restore Sound Library’ does not become grey after all the procedure and if I press it again it starts again downloading…is this downloading a new part or the same?….Please Help and thanks a lot for your attention,

        1. Open Preferences, click Loops, and uncheck “Filter for more relevant results” next to Keyword Browsing. The Slide Guitar and Clavinet loops are in keys outside the two-semitone range of default C-major projects, and thus are hidden with the default preference setting

    1. I just downloaded the new version 10.0.3. I’t not very friendly. I want to play along with music in itunes and listen to the guitar through a head set. I’m interfacing through APGEE. The sound of the guitar will cut out after a while. I have to push the play button to get sound again. I’m a rooky a this what am I doing wrong. Is there a garageband for dummies somewhere? Thanks.

      1. I also have the problem that my audio signal is dropped when using GB to play my guitar to a song. I use Riffstation to play the song and use GB to amplify the guitar signal. GB will drop the guitar signal and I have to return to GB and reset the Irig HD device to reconnect sound until it drops it again. Very frustrating. I have 8gb Ram and 156 SSD HD. Help.

  2. Hi Patrick,

Thanks for taking the time to compile this article. I’ve been happy to have your guidance on GB since I found your site this past month or so. It’s so great that there’s a resource like this to make the complex less daunting. Keep up the great work, and thanks again!!

  3. Hey man, any tips for rewiring other apps? Since the new version came out I haven’t been able to rewire Garageband and Reason 5, and the update doesn’t seem to have done anything to change that.

      1. Liam: I’ve run into the same issue. I’ve been sharing tracks as audio files to my desktop and then dragging them into garageband which is far from ideal.

Patrick: Rewire is a protocol that allows Garageband(not sure if it works with newer version)/Logic/Abelton live etc.. to use other clients such as Reason, Melodyne or other audio creation + manipulation applications as a “slave” and it rewires it into the host program’s mix. So if you wanted to make a sound that’s not in Garageband you would have been able to use it live from another program.

  4. Hi Patrick, I am very new to garage band and have just downloaded book. I have a question? I recorded a acoustic guitar track last night and then after the recording used the blue cat chorus to add to the mix. I decided I didnt like the sound and can’t get it off the mix. How can I get this off the mix? Silly question I know…………all I want to do is try a few plug in sounds and seem unable to remove after trying out………appreciate you pointing me in the right direction or where this might be in your manual? All the best Robin

    1. There is a Power icon you can click on to mute the plugin Robin – either at the top corner of the plug in’s window or on the side of it’s entry in the plug in menu.

  5. I upgraded my Mac to Yosemite the day after it came out and dug the updated Garage Band tweeks. After watching your wonderful video, I noticed that my GB screen didn’t look like your GB screen. For example my GB didn’t have a Vocal on the composition screen. DOH!
Thanks for hipping me to the pull down menu “Restore Sound Library”. Now I’m downloading gigs of stuff to bring my GB up to speed. Bless you Patrick!
    Rock on brother…

  6. Hi Patrick

I’m pretty new to garageband, but good so far, however when I dragged a loop to the timeline (Southern Piano) the whole tempo had changed. What am I doing wrong ?

  7. I just don’t get what the heck Apple have been doing in recent years, especially with GB, i have a pretty new macbook pro and have GB 4.1.2, GB 6.0.5 and the latest version, just to keep compatibility with old works, and keep the good old effects…

…and all this pales into insignificance when you look at GB on the iPad, I think it’ been about 4 versions in the last few months…I’m mobile and get sick to death with Apple and its bipolar attitude to software costing me a fortune in roving 3G…

That said, GB is a great tool, I have found your guide very useful, many of Apple’s changes involve ‘hiding’ stuff unnecessarily, and you have been most useful to find it all again lol

It is weird how Apple used to sell its gear on the principle that it is ‘intuitively simple’…yet now seem to change for the sake of changing…TBH, since Mavericks I’ve been thinking that Apple have been giving away its software because no one would buy recent incarnations…so bad is it.

  8. Hey Patrick, just want to say thank you for all the time effort you put into trying to make us better G-B’ers.
I’ve been using GB for quite some time now and can get around pretty good.
However where I always have trouble is being able to extend my loop and still be in correct time and in synch. There has to be an easy way to do this.
Where can I go to to find a decent video lesson on how to accomplish this?

  9. Thanks for the great videos Patrick. I have some mild trepidation that
if I upgrade, that my jampacks won’t be included that I have now. I wonder
if they would still be there? At this point, I don’t want to risk losing anything
that I’ve been building up for a few years.

    1. Hi Mike,

Are you upgrading from Garageband ’11, or from Garageband 10? Either way your Jam packs will be safe and sound – both versions draw their sounds and loop libraries from the same files.

      1. I’d be upgrading from Garageband ’11 – which I’m very familiar with and although your comment is reassuring, change scares me a bit.

      2. Hey Patrick,

I have been using garageband 6.0.1 for quite some time now and can really get around. we love all the jam packs we have. Just bought a new MAC running OS X yosemite and I can’t seem to get my jam packs to be recognized in the new garageband 10.0.3. Are they compatible? I have over 6000 drum sounds in those jampacks I would love to use.

        Thanks,

        Carla

        1. If it’s the loops from your jampacks that are no longer showing up Carla, try opening the loop browser and click where it says ‘Loops’ (above the type and genre selection buttons).

At the bottom of the drop down menu that appears, click where it says ‘Re-index all loops’. You should find all your loops are now available for use.

  10. Hey Patric, I’m stil having the problem of no sound is coming from my built in speakers. This only happens when GB is open. The rest of the time they work normal. I am no longer getting that error message though so that’s cool. I did both of the fixes. Any idea’s ?
    Thanks again,
    Jim.

        1. With it connected, open Garageband preferences (shortcut is ⌘ + ,) and click on the ‘Audio/Midi tab. Here, check that your ‘Output settings’ has ‘Built In Output’ selected.

  11. Hey Patrick,
I’m a pretty heavy user of GB. This last update is probably going to be a show stopper for me. Each week when my band rehearses I record our entire session on 8 distinct tracks in GB. This usually ends up being about a 7-8 gig file. After the session (in the previous version) I would split all 8 tracks at the beginning and ending of each song (about 15 tunes) and then highlite all 8 tracks in that split section, copy and then paste into a new GB project for each song. That way I could easily edit and save each song individually. You can’t do that in the new version, which I think is a massive oversight. It’s a very simple EXPECTED operation and has worked perfectly in all previous versions of GB. Apple really dropped the ball on this one in my opinion. I’m trying to figure out how to revert back to the last version now, but if I can’t I guess I’m headed for ProTools. Thoughts?

  12. Thanks Patrick for your help. You do a great job of keeping up with this stuff. I’ve updated and love GB 10.0.3. However, any idea what happened to the de-esser? I’m sure it used to be in the Smart Controls. But it seems to have vanished.

    1. No worries Tony – glad you’re enjoying the new update! You can find the De-Esser in the Plug Ins Menu – look under the ‘Dynamics” sub menu.

      1. Hi Patrick,

I’m just getting into GB 10.0.3, and I’m learning some things from this thread. I notice you haven’t answered Evan and I’m wondering why? Can GB still do what he described?

        Cheers,
        Rasjad

      2. Hi Patrick,

Is there a way to export MP3 files from Garageband 10.0.3 straight to iTunes?

        Cheers,

  13. Hey Patrick , I was just fiddling around with the Bass track of a song I am working on. Boy Oh Boy that Bass amp feature is COOL !!!

  14. QUOTE: ‘Restore Sound Library’ prompted a quick download and then voilà – I was good to go.”
14 GIGABYTES downloads that fast for you?

    Another Problem I am having..

QUOTE: “allows you to be as creative as you want to be, without the ‘imposed’ limitations present previously.”

This is the opposite of the truth. They removed all the filters! in the last version I could apply different delays, reverbs, pitch change, vocal transformer, etc. Now you are stuck on ONE SETTING where you can adjust those parameters, but CANNOT apply any other filters to it like the old version. “without the ‘imposed’ limitations present previously.” is some kind of joke. This version destroyed the capability to create your own unique sound by destroying it, and getting rid of the original filters (of which you could apply multiple instances into any individual track) So you are frankly wrong. The limitations in this new version are strangling. There are lots of cool sounds, etc, but I will be downloading the last version. This is bullshit. And whatever ASSHOLE made that call to break something that ain’t broken should be FIRED for trying to reinvent the wheel, and breaking it in the process, then saying it’s a better wheel.

    1. Hi Warner,

QUOTE: ’14 GIGABYTES downloads that fast for you?”

Had you previously downloaded all of the additional content (Loops, Drummer, Instruments etc) for Garageband 10? If not, then you were just lucky enough to get all of that content for FREE (In version 10, 10.0.1 and 10.0.2 those extras cost $4.99), a lengthy 14GB download is a small price to pay in my opinion!

QUOTE: “You are frankly wrong. This is bullshit”

I think you’ve misunderstood what I meant by ‘previously’ – I refer to Garageband version 10 through 10.0.2 NOT to Garageband ’11 (Part of the iLife ’11 suite of programs), which you are obviously describing with your talk of ‘filters’, ‘delays’ and ‘vocal transformers’.

If you have updated from Garageband ’11 to this latest version, the older version is still available for you to use. Simply look in your Applications folder for Garageband 6.0.5. it’s still fully usable if you would prefer to stick with that version.

  15. Is it just me or is the ability to master the sound as a whole gone? You use to be able to click on master and then different preset master options would appear on the left of the screen. Now all I get is “try using a different patch in the library to use smart controls” Master EQ still works but I can’t seem to raise and lower my highs and lows throughout the whole project anymore.

    1. There’s still a full range of Master presets available Zach – they’re in the library pane when you open the master track. You should still have full control over the sound of your Master using either the smart controls available or adding your own effects in the plug ins menu?

  16. I can’t get the Restore Sound Library download to completely download. I tried yesterday and after saying it would take as estimated 2 hours, it finally finished but with an error message that it had failed. Started it again yesterday evening but it is still only half-way completed. I’ve checked my internet connections (all fine). I did previously purchase the $4.99 loop upgrades when GB 10.0 came out.
    Frustrated!

    Any hints?

    1. I have the same problem. When I go to restore, I get this: “GarageBand is not connected to the Internet. Please check your Internet connection and try again.” Well, I’ve checked everything I can think of. I am perfectly able to upload to SoundCloud from GB, why does it think I have no Internet connection? GRRRR

      1. I’m having the exact same problem – “GarageBand is not connected to the Internet. Please check your internet connection and try again”. I know I am connected to the internet so this is very frustrating. And I don’t know what to do…..I thought Apple was supposed to be easy to use!

        1. I had this problem too. What I did was to open a ‘terminal’ window (use the spotlight finder, type “terminal”. Then did a ‘ping’ to keep the internet connection ‘live’ and it worked. the command was ‘ping http://www.google.com‘ and I just kept that going till the sound library restored. Prior to that it failed every time.

  17. I used to use GB to edit my vocals in my YouTube videos and I went to record something the other day …. I now can’t figure anything out in the new GB. I have no clue how to edit anything (where can I change the vocal room to vocal hall, etc?) or put track reverb it anything …. It’s very frustrating and I’m not liking it at all. I also keep getting a million error messages every time I click on something. I’ve tried restoring the sound library and it won’t finish downloading it. Help ? What should I do ? I want the old GB back .

  18. in the old ver of GB i could mark a spot on the track with a “P” however with the new ver of GB the “P” brings up the piano. can anyone tell me how to mark a section off so i can easily come back to it and extract that section at a later date?
    Thanks

  19. Hi Patrick – is there any way to bypass using GB’s built-in guitar and bass amps? I’m running my amp direct into my MacBook with USB and would like to get the sound of that amp without it being impacted by the built-in GB amps. Is this possible? Thanks!

  20. Hi Patrick, I’m manually writing drums midi while playing an audio track, and GB keeps crashing all the time. Can you help me please?

    Thank you very much!

  21. HELP! I have GB 10.0.3 – and I just upgraded my Valhalla Room plug in…I see the au file in the Library – Audio – Component folder, but have NO idea why i dont see it as a plug in choice when i create a VOCAL (mic in) track!
How do I add it as an option?

    Hope you have an answer!

    THANKS!

    1. One other weird thing

i SEE THE PLUG IN on the loop tracks, the virtual instrument tracks, all tracks BUT THE ONE I NEED MOST – the trumpet track played into a live mic

      ???

  22. Having happily used previous versions of Garageband, I find version 10, in all its variations, to be a horror. Nothing is easy to find, and the manual note editing process doesn’t work at all. It is very frustrating to try to do this (and to try to teach students to do it) when it absolutely doesn’t work.

This version is just a pile of crap.

    You may quote me…

  23. Hey Patrick, I’m having trouble with a issue. I’m very new to Garageband and I’ve been trying to change the key of individual tracks and also the tempo of each track. Every time I try to do so all the other tracks change as well. I was wondering if there’s a solution to this? It would be a lifesaver if you saw this and give me a solution. Thank you!

    1. You can only change the tempo of the project Jasmine, not individual tracks. Same for the project’s key – though you could try using the pitchshift function to affect an individual track’s key.

  24. I keep getting “Could not find layout General Audio 10”. Please help. The restore sound library is not an option and the reindex loop step didn’t work. I’m using version 10.0.3. I’m new to it and today it was working perfect. Now I keep getting this error message. I just want to record voice mainly at the moment.

  25. Apologies if someone has already asked this, Are the old Garageband Jam Pack loops compatible with 10.0.3? I’m really enjoying the new interface but miss the variety of software instruments. If I can no longer use them is there any other options for instrument voices?

    Thanks!

  26. Hi Patrick, I’m using GB 10.0.3 with Symphobia2 / Kontakt5 and the editing process has started to become so slow it’s almost un-workable. Do you have any tips on how to speed up editing?
    I have a minimac 2.5ghz, 16gb ram, i5.
    Thanks.

  27. Hi! I downloaded the latest version of GarageBand and for some reason it’s having trouble downloading the sound library. It keeps saying “Your computer must be connected to the internet”, although my internet is completely fine. Any suggestions?

  28. So I updated my computer: Installed some more RAM, updated the OS to Mavericks then to Yosemite. I was thinking, “Great! This new garageband is going to be perfect for what I need!” Come to find out, the joke is on me. My audio interface is not compatible with the new OS or the new GB. Of course, this is my fault for not researching before diving into update after update. A new, less dated audio interface should solve my problem, right? Nope. After shopping around, I found that nearly all of the good audio interfaces are not compatible with Yosemite or GB 10.0.3. What the hell apple?! By “good” audio interface I mean one that is not a tiny little stick like the iRig but also not a phenomenal one that is going to cost me a couple grand. Has anyone found an interface that works near-flawlessly with these new Apple systems? The focusrite scarlett seems to be an option, but aparently my guitar’s humbuckers are too good for the interface and will cause clicking sounds unless I change their output. I have also researched this extensively on the web with no viable conclusion. Sorry to rant everybody, but this is frustrating! If anyone has found a decent interface that is compatible with both Yosemite and Garageband 10.0.3 please let me know! I’ve got the itch to record but no hands to scratch it!!

  29. I seem to be having problems downloading all of the sounds and lesson videos on GB v.10.0.3. My system is an iMac mid-2007, with OS X Yosemite v.10.10.2. I really up-to-date with everything and when I contacted Apple about this issue, they told me there was an “issue with communicating with their servers.” Is there any other solution to my problem??? I keep getting an error that I can’t download all the sounds and I have to re-start to get it to work but I keep receiving the same dang error. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance!!

  30. Disgusted that Apple leave us in the lurch with missing instruments and samples. Jam packs don’t load, MBox 2 won’t work, M Audio midi controller won’t work. Tried buying MainStage 3 but can’t download the massive 40gig files and they can’t offer it on disk. Its all too bad if you have a miserly 15gig for $105 australian per month. Go to the Apple store and download ? Not unless you can leave your machine there for a couple of days ! So many staff and I’m told i can get 1 and a half minutes with a creative tech. Steve Jobs said build it and they will come. Now its a case of let them sort it out themselves.
P.S Pay Patrick for graciously sorting out the rest of your unfinished business you arrogant and lazy %$^&**s

  31. Whenever I go to “Update sound library” the download begins and says 2 hours, then quits after 10 minutes. What gives? Any ideas? Thanks

  32. Hi Patrick,

I’m having a problem with waveforms disappearing on some tracks. I have one project in particular in which all of the tracks were recorded from a real instrument through an apogee jam interface and all but two of the tracks, and the drum track, appear as either flat lines or nearly flat lines with no waveforms. They play fine, but there is no way to edit them. As it happens I need to clean up two of the tracks that are flattened out. Have you encountered this problem and do you have any idea how to fix it? Thanks.

  33. So, how many times do you figure you need to Restore Sound Library, download everything, and then Update Sound Library, and download everything? Because I’m on my third time now and I still can’t open the controls to fix the reverb. Any thoughts?

  34. Have Garageband 10.0.03 version trying to set up Garageband with an electric guitar using ARTcessories TConnect USB to Guitar interface and not getting any sound. New to Garage band and need help.

  35. I want to be able to record from skype directly into GarageBand as a separate track.
I was using Garageband, Line In, Soundflower all together but it was recording everything on one track. I cannot get Garageband to recognize the Skype caller as a 3rd track, only MIC 1 and MIC 2.

    Macbook Air MAC OS X, Aleis 2iO, 2 sm 58 mic’s

  36. Hy, I’ve an ‘fast track pro’ as interface, an imac ‘late 2009’, but when I want to record on the latest version of garageband, there is no audio output. Does someone has a solution for this?

  37. I just upgraded to GB10 and wanted to use the “drummer” – I am getting the track setup with drum waveform onto the project but no drum playback – i see that it is there, but nothing is playing back except my original tracks — it’s like the volume is down on the drum track , but the volume isn’t controlling it – I’ve; tried it on different GB files but same thing on each, what am I missing? thanks! TK

  38. Hey Patrick, I was just wondering if you knew how to find an affective MIDI pitch bend in garageband 10.0.3? I’ve found the pitch bend in the MIDI draw menu of the piano roll, but I can’t seem to pitch bend down? And it also seems pretty glitchy in that I can’t draw a pattern for the pitch bend to follow in a lot of places… It’s rather confusing! Any help is appreciated, my friend.

  39. I somehow deleted the 10.0.3 app in launcher. I can only load the programme via the app store. How can I download the complete package? In the app store it says i have it. stumped!!

  40. Hello – Had been using GB 11, and frequently used the transpose option for chord changes in regions on tracks, but cannot find this option on GB 10.0.3. Is this still available?

  41. I am using a macbook pro with yosemite 10.10.3, 8GB ram and 750GB of storage. I just downloaded (and paid for) Garageband 10.0.3 and what a waist of 5 dollars. The latency is TERRIBLE!

Are there any fixes, updates or recommendations for this. It is so un-useable i could scream. Apple took out all of the options for buffer sizes and now there is no way to make any adjustments. I thought this was a glitch with my mics but does the same thing with the built in mic as well.

Unfortunately, the paid project i am in the middle of right now is not going to get done.

    1. Hmmm. – seems strange as latency really isn’t as much of an issue with GB 10 as it was in previous versions – are you using any memory intensive plug ins? Are there a large number of software instrument tracks in your project?

      1. No, I had one drum pack track, one bass pack track a live acoustic guitar, a live mandolin and a backing vocal track. Was attempting to lay down a second (main) vocal track when i started experiencing all of these problems. I thought it was the mic, then the USB port, then switched to another mic on my M Audio interface, then the built in (mac) mic all with the same results.

I am staring to think it has something to do with the laptop itself. I close out all of my programs in order to free up as much ram as possible (duel core processor with 8GB ram) so that the only thing open is Garageband.

I switched over to a program that i use exclusively for voice over work to atleast lay down the vocal track and experienced a slight amount of tolerable latency. But what i experienced in Garageband was close to .5 seconds.

First, thanks for getting back to me i have post twice now in the Apple forums with no response. Does any of this make sense?

    2. Just wondering what Mac you have, my ageing 2012 Macbook Pro 9,2 with 2.9GHz dual core i7, SSD and 16 GB ram shows no latency, whether I am using internal or external mike, or even a USB mic or guitar input…

      Most strange…

  42. I apologize if this has been asked and answered, already but where have the individual tracks’ fade controls gone in the latest GB? Any help would be so appreciated, I’ve already spent a half hour searching for this! All I can seem to find is the “master track” fade controls. Previous GB each track had it’s own option for fade.

  43. Hey, I am trying to sync the metronome from garageband to a midi controller (TC-Helicon Voicelive Touch 2), and I can’t seem to get it to work. I’m pretty sure I have all the settings right on the controller end, is there something I’m missing within the garageband set up to make this work? I have it connected via usb cable. Thanks!

  44. Hi, I recently purchased an iMac for recording music so it has Yosemite os x and GarageBand 10.0.3. I also have anew Steinberg UR22 audio interface and come to find out it’s not compatible with Yosemite and GB. My research hasn’t found any interface that is compatible with Yosemite and GB. Any ideas?

  45. Hi Patrick,

I have a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB interface and I just can’t get 10.0.3 to detect it. This was no problem with previous versions of GB. What should I do?

    Thanks for your help…

  46. I ve just had to upload the new GarageBand as when I tried to listen to old tracks from 2014 they said I needed an update…… Did so and paid £4.00 for the privilege but one ALL THE TRACKS ARE GONE!! My ‘recent projects’ says clear. Can any one help

    1. You need to open your projects directly from the project file Pete, this will convert them into the ‘new’ Garageband format. You can search for your projects by name in spotlight search if you’re having trouble locating them.

  47. Amplitube 4 software, for some reason, sets the default buffer size to 512K. When using Amplitube stand-alone, this is tweakable via Preferences. When using default GarageBand amp modelling, I don’t see any latency either. But using Amplitube 4 as the amp modelling in GarageBand seems to use the default buffer setting which is impossible to change (or at least I haven’t found where to change it). Does anybody have any suggestions?

  48. I have a very simple (maybe stupid) question — I use GB for rather basic song covers, though I have a decent mic and like to sound as good as I can for an amateur. I used to use GB’s vocal presets in older versions, but those seem to have disappeared with the updated version.

Any idea how I can get them back/where I can find them? Or am I SOL? Many thanks!

  49. Hey Patrick,
If I upload the new version of garageband what happens to all the tracks I’ve done on the old version?

  50. Greetings,
I had added a lot of effects plugins and loops to my old garageband version, Im just now upgrading to the newest 10.1., will my effects and loops still be there? And can I open old projects created in previous versions? Thanks much.

  51. Good day sir Patrick, I am using High Sierra but the Garage band 10.3.2 couldn’t detect my interface. Any suggestion sir thanks.

  52. Multitracking 4-part music with live instruments through a mic interface, the simplest of uses. All was going great until it suddenly stopped listening to the mic. Did a full take on a new track, looked up and it hadn’t recorded a thing. WTF- go to internet and discover: Time limit?? X bars at Y tempo = Z limit? How completely f’ing stupid is that! Good-bye Garageband, it’s a waste of HD space. I think there’s a ‘b’ missing in the name.

  53. Hi Patrick. I’ve been using GB for many years, mostly for mixing imported audio files. I have just purchased a few of your guides and thanks for these; very easy to follow and useful.
This week I upgraded to a new MacBook Pro running Catalina and installed GB10.3.4. I previously used GB11 6.05. I have enjoyed adding effects from Track Info – Effects. However I can no long find some favourite effects, such as “Long Panning Echoes” and “Wondering Around”. I found these useful for ambients washes within this mix.
So, am I still able to access the effects suite as found on older versions of GB?

  54. Hi Patrick,

I just updated GarageBand but now I can’t get my guitar audio to work. I’m connected via a Lexicon Lambda midi interface. I have input set to the Lambda in both Garageband Preference and under Sound Preferences on my MAC. I can see the lights flickering on the interface so sound it at least getting that far but nothing in GB. Any advice?
