Free Compressor Round Up

The latest version of Garageband is missing something.

It’s missing something so important to the production and mixing of great sounding projects, that I would personally find it incredibly difficult to work with the program without adding some extra third party plug ins…

You guessed it –  Garageband 10 is missing a useable compressor… and before you say it –  i know there’s that wee dial in Smart Controls marked ‘compressor’, but i’m not sure it counts…

This thing isn't much use...
This thing isn’t much use…

Sure, it squashes your audio, reducing the peaks in volume to the same level as the quieter sounds, but there’s no gain control to bring the overall volume back up to a usable level.

There’s no attack, release or threshold controls, meaning you can’t tailor the fit of your compression to the particular instrument or sounds you’re mixing.

It’s a bit rubbish if you ask me.

It’s not all doom and gloom though. You can always add new compressors to your Garageband plug in arsenal and bypass the built in compressor completely, but where would you find them? How much would they cost?

In this video I round up three of my favourite compressor plug ins that you can add to Garageband right now. They’re all fantastic quality, relatively easy to use and best of all… completely free!

  1. Dear Patrick
Many thanx for compiling this clip! I enjoyed watching it very much!
I worked with GB a couple of years back, but due to the limits imposed on
It , i gave it up.
Seeing it has been updated, has made me curious and i will give her another shot!
Your GB site is truly freakin’brilliant and your tips and tricks are to!!
My best mixes were always done on GB as it was free of too much of everything!
And i stayed focused more than I do using Logic 9 and X.
I haven’t set hands on GB since the update! But thanxs to your devotion to it,
I’ll give it another go! Good on yer mate! And God bless! Chears!

  2. I really appreciate that you don’t just throw money at things. There are lots of free or cheap plugs, it’s just a matter of tracking them down and figuring out how to use them. Thanks.

  3. Thanks for the heads up – I was looking for a replacement compressor and the Klanghelm exactly fit my ease of use/effectiveness bullseye! Keep up the good work.

  4. Hi Patrick!

I’m still using the older version of GB, (v6.0.5), due to the compatibility issues regarding some of my VSTs. Is there a way i can get a copy of your GB guide for the older versions of Garageband? Oh and also, do you know anything about sidechaining or using sidechain compression plugins for GB? I’ve heard many suggest using the ‘ducking’ function but it doesn’t seem to achieve the EDM style effect i hope to achieve.

    Thanks so much!

  5. Hey Patrick, thanks so much for creating this website! So much great info and also you are really funny.

Do you know if there are any compressor add-ons for the ipad version of GarageBand?

    Thanks again!!

  6. First of all thank you for all the free information you have provided they are very funny to watch as well.. (I deally liked the boring content warning :))
I am supposed to record a chorus with a piano and an caustic guitar all of these are real instruments none of them are digital= – So the only form of recoding is up to my mikes and audio interface. I made a search on the web and have come up with the idea to set up this bundle. Any help or advice you give will be very welcome as it will be my first take.
I have GB on my Mac Pro a recent version ( but somehow the garageband seems different that the one u used in your guide and some functions on my GB seem to be missing, I will try to upload a newer version )
    Audio Interface : Scarlet 6i6
XRL cables: I haven’t decided yet
Microphones: Shure KSM 27 – for the chorus
Rode NT5 pair one for the guitar and the second for the piano

Do you think this is a good system to but all together because I don’t want to be ending up with a pair of unmatched stuff when I have ordered them from UK or USA all the way to Turkey (where I live:))

Do you know who else I can ask before buying?

Thank you for your newsletters You are great!

    Best, Chaala

  7. Once I download these compressors, I am at a loss of how to install them into my MacBook. I have searched online for “how to” articles in vain. Can you help?

  8. I’m currently using an old iPad mini 2, the last year it’s had software issues and I cannot access garage band, which I need for publishing my music, I cannot afford to buy a new iPad, is there a way of obtaining the old software again for my iPad, as it won’t upgrade to iOS 13, I’m struggling to fix it, I freed up memory, that made no difference, please help. I also have an apple Mac Pro which is the same age as the iPad mini 2, I need the software to work on both. Thanks.

  9. Hi there,

I have downloaded Mcompressor 14.15 because I wanted to use the sidechaining feature, I watched your video guide on this compressor but it didn’t mention sidechaining and I can’t figure out how to use it. I watched a video on youtube of someone using it in another DAW and they made it look very simple but in garageband it is anything but or perhaps won’t even work in gb. Can anyone help?!?!?
