Garageband Amp Designer Tutorial

GarageBand Amp Designer Tutorial

One of my absolute favorite features in GarageBand for Mac, the Amp Designer is bloody fantastic!

Lifted wholesale from Apple‘s other music production software, Logic Pro X, the Amp Designer made its way into GarageBand way back in 2013.

Whether you just want to pick a preset and rock out, or dig in and fine tune your set up in more detail, GarageBand’s Amp Designer is sure to make your guitars sound awesome.

Jam packed with dozens of amp, head, cabinet and even microphone variations, you’re guaranteed to find the tone you’re looking for.

In this video, I walk you through the controls and features you’ll use to shape your sound:

That’s all for my GarageBand Amp Designer Tutorial.

Hungry for more? Round out your GarageBand guitar know-how with my Pedalboard tutorial.

Have you used Garageband’s Amp Designer? How do you think it stacks up against some of the other ‘premium’ guitar sims out there? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Thanks for the vid!
I use the iOS version of GB, which has a limited set of amp models, but the tones and the quality is similar to the desktop ones.
Generally I found the clean and crunch models to be quite useful, but I struggled to find a good high gain model. Either it was too much noisy or simply weak. I ended up using my tube preamp for hugh gain models.

  2. Super informative video; it’s satisfying to learn more about something you thought you already knew everything about. Who was that canine duo in the photo? Cool!

    1. Glad you found it useful Lou. No idea who the dogs are i’m afraid… Grrr-vana? K-9 inch nails? The rolling bones? … i’ll see myself out…

    1. You can adjust the quality of YouTube videos by clicking on the cog icon in the bottom right corner of the videos’ window Anthony.

  3. I really like this tutorial and was wondering where I can download or buy the app for this to have on my computer

  4. Patrick, Thank you for offering such easy to follow and understand videos as well as your “The GarageBand Quick Start Guide Lite Edition V10.2”.

I’m new to GarageBand and have tried doing a few things myself but realized outside help was needed and was very glad I found your website and well done video’s!! Also, your sense of humor and timing using it fits in well with your presentations.

I’ve been using 2 other DAW’s (Acoustica Mixcraft Pro 8 and Magix Music Maker) which are DAW’s I can use fairly well but still have a way’s to go to get the fine art down of learning all of what they offer in depth. Since I have an older Imac desktop I thought why not learn more about GarageBand and your material is a big help with using GarageBand.

    Thank you, Patrick!!

  5. Hey Pat,
I’ve been using GB for years, and recently had a need to plug my electric geet direct in. The Amps and effects had me a little bamboozled, and I didn’t really like the presets for my particular purpose.
I searched all over the www to no avail. Then… Bingo! Found this. I’m now about to become an expert thanks to your vid, and then I’m shooting straight over to the pedalboard designer video tutorial you have here. Awesome job mate so clearly explained with minimum fuss.
    Thank you. – Mark Mc
(PS: I’m a paid up subscriber to your mixing guide too… no regrets there either. Please keep up the good work.)
